World Not Ending in 2012, Says NASA

My Zimbio

World Not Ending in 2012, Says NASA
Contrary to what you may read on the Internet, the world is not going to end in 2012. A rogue planet named Nibiru is not on a collision course with Earth. And a solar flare won't toast the planet.
It's all fiction, though the makers of the film "2012" may lead you to think otherwise.
"I don't have anything against the movie. It's the way it's been marketed and the way it exploits people's fears," NASA scientist David Morrison at the Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., told Discovery News.
Morrison has launched a counter-attack through his "Ask An Astrobiologist" online column, which he says has gotten more than 1,000 questions about the end of the world.

Scientific misinformation about 2012 has been ramping up for a few years, with more than 200 books and 1,000 Web sites purporting to explain various doomsday scenarios. Sony Pictures is behind a particularly viral campaign to build publicity for its upcoming apocalyptic movie "2012," which debuts on Nov. 13.
The company has set up an interlinked family of Web sites and Facebook pages to infuse a sense of reality to its fictional work.

The lead character in the film, played by actor John Cusack, for example, is the faux author of a faux book about a murder, conspiracy and disaster aboard the space shuttle Atlantis, which, coincidentally, is poised for launch on a space station construction mission the weekend the movie debuts.

2012 Phenomenon

My Zimbio

SCIENTIFIC EXPERTS from around the world are predicting that five years from now, all life on Earth could well come to an end. Some are saying it'll be humans that would set it off. Others believe that a natural phenomenon will be the cause. And the religious folks are saying it'll be God himself who would press the stop button. The following are some likely arguments as to why the world would end by the year 2012.

Reason one: Mayan calendar

The first to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things -- building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and sacrificing virgins.

Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it's likely they've got the end of the world right as well.

Reason two: Sun storms

Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery. Our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the earth with lot of radiation energy. It's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012.

Reason three: The atom smasher

Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator. Basically, its a 27 km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it's properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.

Reason four: The Bible says it

If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn't bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act as well. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between good an evil, has been set for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese Book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.

Reason five: Super volcano

Yellowstone National Park in United States is famous for its thermal springs and old faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple -- it's sitting on top of the world's biggest volcano and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we're many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang.

Reason six: The physicists

This one's case of bog -- simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berkely University have been crunching the numbers. They've determined that the earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they're claiming that their calculations prove that we're all going to die, very soon. They are also saying that their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 per cent; and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.

Reason seven: Earth's magnetic field

We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that shields us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call North and South have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so -- and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30 kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is under way, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.

Vira Samvat Start with Diwali in Jainisam

My Zimbio

Festival of Diwali in Jainism

Diwali has a very special significance in Jainism, just like Buddha Purnima, the date of Buddha's Nirvana, is for Buddhists as Christmas is for Christians. Lord Mahavira, the last of the Jain Tirthankaras, attained Nirvana or Moksha on this day at Pavapuri on Oct. 15, 527 BC, on Chaturdashi of Kartika, as Tilyapannatti of Yativrashaba from the sixth century states:
Mahavira is responsible for establishing the Dharma followed by Jains even today. According to tradition, the chief disciple of Mahavira, Ganadhara Gautam Swami also attained complete knowledge (Kevalgyana) on this day, thus making Diwali one of the most important Jain festivals.

Mahavira attained his nirvana at the dawn of the amavasya (new moon). According to the Kalpasutra by Acharya Bhadrabahu, 3rd century BC, many gods were present there, illuminating the darkness. The following night was pitch black without the light of the gods or the moon. To symbolically keep the light of their master's knowledge alive:
16 Gana-kings, 9 Malla and 9 Lichchhavi, of Kasi and Kosal, illuminated their doors. They said: "Since the light of knowledge is gone, we will make light of ordinary matter" ("गये से भवुज्जोये, दव्वुज्जोयं करिस्समो").
Dipavali was first mentioned in Jain books as the date of the nirvana of Mahavira. In fact, the oldest reference to Diwali is a related word, dipalikaya, which occurs in Harivamsha-Purana, written by Acharya Jinasena [10] and composed in the Shaka Samvat era in the year 705.

tatastuh lokah prativarsham-araat ako
prasiddha-deepalikaya-aatra bharate
samudyatah poojayitum jineshvaram
jinendra-nirvana vibhuti-bhaktibhak

Translation: The gods illuminated Pavanagari by lamps to mark the occasion. Since that time, the people of Bharat celebrate the famous festival of "Dipalika" to worship the Jinendra (i.e. Lord Mahavira) on the occasion of his nirvana.
Dipalikaya roughly translates as "light leaving the body". Dipalika, which can be roughly translated as "splenderous light of lamps", is used interchangeably with the word "Diwali".
The way Jains celebrate Diwali is different in many respects. There is a note of asceticism in whatever the Jains do, and the celebration of Diwali is not an exception. The Jains celebrate Diwali during the month of Kartik for three days. During this period, among the Shvetambaras, devoted Jains observe fasting and chant the Uttaradhyayan Sutra, which contain the final pravachans of Lord Mahavira, and meditate upon him. Some Jains visit Pavapuri in Bihar where he attained Nirvan. In may temples special laddus are offered particularly on this day.

Vira Nirvana Samvat: The Jain year starts with Pratipada following Diwali. Vira Nirvana Samvat 2534 starts with Diwali 2007. The Jain businesspeople traditionally started their accounting year from Diwali. The relationship between the Vir and Shaka era is given in Titthogali Painnaya and Dhavalaa by Acharya Virasena:
पंच य मासा पंच य वास छच्चेव होन्ति वाससया|
परिणिव्वुअस्स अरिहितो तो उप्पन्नो सगो राया||

Thus the Nirvana occurred 605 years and 5 months before the Saka era.
On 21 October 1974 the 2500th Nirvana Mahotsava was celebrated by all the Jain throughout India.

How to Survive the Swine Flu & Solidify Your Immune System Naturally

My Zimbio

As we approach the upcoming flu season many people have become worried about the approaching swine flu. WHO has declared a Pandemic Level 6 and mass vaccines have been ordered for the entire world. I've never been a fan of vaccines so back in May when the flu started to come to the news I started researching all the possible ways to build up an extra strong immune system.

The information that I am presenting is not a substitute for a vaccine or a guarantee that you won't catch a virus but an alternative through natural means to increase the strength of your own immune system. Many people have already started a daily regimen of Vitamin C and Echinacea. I also discovered that Vitamin D was also being added to their daily immune system building cocktail.
Vitamin D Can Help Against Flu?
In my research to learn more and find other things that may assist I started coming across many articles on Vitamin D and how it can help against the flu. Many people have now taken this information and decided that they were going to add a supplemental level of Vitamin D to their diets. The information isn't proven but it was compelling enough to me to add an extra dose of Vitamin D to my daily regimen.
After reading dozens of articles on Vitamin D and how it can potentially help you fight influenza I found one from Medical News Today that contained a lot of information on some of the probable causes as to why it works and a clinical setting where the doctor discovered that he thought Vitamin D was helping. The information was so compelling I continued in my research and found consistency about Vitamin D and the positive effects it has against the flu. In light of our recent swine flu pandemic I am surprised that this possible preventative measure isn't being more highly broadcasted.
How Vitamin D maybe helping.
Vitamin D Is A Very Important Nutrient
In more recent articles studies lab work has shown that lack of vitamin D is associated with a lesser production of an antimicrobial peptide named hCAP-18. This is a protein that works with immune-system cells to kill all of those pesky pathogens.
In short, people with Vitamin D deficiencies have immune systems that don't operate as well. The thing that you might find the most shocking is that most people may actually have a Vitamin D deficiency.
Vitamin D is a very important nutrient that is found in very low levels in our food. Milk has been fortified with Vitamin D but it only has around 100iu's per serving. Our bodies can produce huge amounts of Vitamin D through exposure to sunlight but the current recommendations on sunlight are to limit your exposure and cover up with sunscreen. So unless you are constantly exposing yourself to the sun, eating enormous quantities of herring and salmon, or drinking a lot of milk daily, then you might be deficient in Vitamin D and a higher risk to catching influenza viruses.
Recent trials are taking place to see what happens when subjects are given 1,200 to 2,000 iu's per day. The current recommendation is 200-600 iu's per day. There are people taking as high as 5,000 to 10,000 iu's per day to build up their current blood levels in preparation for the flu season. I'm not going to make any recommendations as the best way to find how much you need is through blood work so to find the optimal level you would need to work with your doctor.
As times change, our environment gets more toxic, and science advances I believe that the levels of all vitamins and minerals should be evaluated. What was good 50 years ago isn't necessarily still good enough for the constant changes we face. If you are are interested in increasing your Vitamin D intake you can find Vitamin D at any local drug store or nutrition shop. It's a good idea to talk to your doctor about what levels are right for you. The flu season is approaching so take action now by building your immune system.
